73% of people believe the Olympics peaked at London 2012

What a time.

73% of people believe that the Olympics peaked at London 2012, as per a recent JOE Instagram poll.

As the legendary festival of sport once more draws to a near close, fans have reflected on the best tournament we’ve ever witnessed and what that actually was.

London 2012 came out categorically victorious in the polling, with a staggering 73% of voters.

In second place, only 10% of the JOE audience believed that the Paris 2024 showing was an improvement on twelve years ago.

As for twelve years ago though, what a time it was.

The best opening ceremony we had the pleasure of watching. A star-studded showing with some of the greatest athletes of modern history at their peak.

Usian Bolt smashing the 100m in 9.63 seconds. Michael Phelps with four golds and two silver medals to become the most-decorated Olympian of all-time. Jessica Ennis-Hill’s remarkable heptathlon gold. Mo Farah’s 5000m and 10,000m victories. We were witnessing greatness there and then.

There was also the rarity of a Team GB men’s football team, now treasured as nostalgia.

Across Great Britain, everyone had Olympic fever. Shops were packed with merchandise. There was such a joyous feeling of sheer collectiveness.

It’s clear, they were the best Olympic games.
