Dad’s Army star John Clegg has died aged 90

Dad’s Army star John Clegg has died at the age of 90.

Along with his appearance in Dad’s Army, Clegg was best known for his role as Gunner ‘Paderewski’ Graham in It Ain’t Half Hot Mum across 56 episodes.

An announcement confirming his passing said he “died peacefully in care”, adding: “He will be missed by all his friends from the theatre, his friends in Chichester and his family.”

A private funeral will be held on August 29.

Clegg also appeared in much-loved 70s comedy series Are You Being Served? and as Clifford Howes in Crossroads: Kings Oak.

He also starred in 2001 film Bridget Jones’s Diary as an unnamed elderly man.

Paying tribute on social media, the British Comedy Society said: We’re saddened to learn of the death of actor John Clegg, best known as It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’s Padrewski, Gunner Graham. He was 90.”

Someone else wrote: “I am so saddened to hear of the passing of John Clegg. Best known for Gunner Graham in ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’! His other guest appearances include ‘Are You Being Served?’ & ‘You Rang M’Lord?’ Always a favourite of mine!”

Author and Bafta member Morris Bright MBE said he was “very sorry indeed to hear that La Di Da Gunner Graham, actor John Clegg, has gone to that great concert party in the sky, aged 90. He certainly was one of the boys who entertained us.”
