Dr. Eric Berg DC is known for providing health advice to his 12.4 million subscribers on YouTube, with the Healthy Ketosis and Intermittent Fasting specialist explaining all on the sensation of feeling tired.
In a video titled ‘Why You Are TIRED All the Time’, the 59-year-old explains the biology behind this feeling you get, even if you are taking care of yourself and eating right.
How is tiredness caused?
It’s all dependant on the mitochondria, which is known as an energy factor within your cells. You’ll probably remember it as the ‘powerhouse’ of the cell from your science lessons at school.
Dr. Berg explained: “If you have any aspects of fatigue, even if you exercise and you run out of gas really fast, or even if you have many of the different health problems that most people have, the mitochondria is at the root of it.”
He added that most diseases come directly from the mitochondria, comparing it to a battery making machine, as food can’t give you energy directly, it has to be made into a chemical form so it can be used, and ATP is produced.
The expert explained the vitamins and key enzymes you need to making ATP, which can all be increased with one straight-forward action.
How do we stop feeling tired?
There’s one crucial thing that you can do to stop yourself from feeling tired according to Dr. Berg, and you can do it yourself too.
It’s exercise.
He calls it the ‘number one way’ to produce more mitochondria, therefore creating more ATP, which brings more energy.
“This is another reason why you should consistently exercise on a regular basis,” he began to explain.
“That’s going to override a lot of other bad things that you might have done in your past and also if you have any types of diseases or problems, this can help counter that because a lot of disease comes from damage to the mitochondria,” the health specialist highlighted.

What else can you do?
Dr. Berg added: “If you’re exercising and you’re making more (mitochondria) and combine that with intermittent fasting, that fasting triggers another thing called autophagy – autophagy is recycling old damaged proteins but also the recycling of the mitochondria.”
What this does is create new mitochondria, meaning that you get even more energy, with the doctor claiming that he wished he knew this when he was younger, as it helps to save a lot of fatigue, putting you in better stead throughout the week.
Intermittent fasting is the act of limiting your food intake to a certain period in the day, which can range anywhere from 6 to 12 hours of eating time, while the rest of the day is spent fasting, which is said to help and control weight gain.
