Miley Cyrus sued over chart-topping song Flowers after being accused of copying Bruno Mars

Miley Cyrus has been hit with a copyright infringement lawsuit alleging she and songwriters copied parts of Bruno Mars’ track

Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’, which somehow made it into my Spotify Wrapped (thanks mum), is at the centre of a lawsuit.

The singer, 31, has been accused of copying one of Bruno Mars’ hit records and is facing a copyright infringement lawsuit for ‘Flowers’ allegedly being too similar to Mars’ 2013 track.

Though it’s important to note that it’s Tempo Music Investments who is suing Cyrus, not Mars.

Tempo Music has accused the Hannah Montana star of ‘intentionally copying’ ‘When I Was Your Man’ with the Grammy award-winning track ‘Flowers’, which came out in 2023.

The music investment platform – which owns a portion of US copyrights to the track – is claiming ‘Flowers’ has unauthorised ‘exploitation’ of Mars’ Hot 100-charting song.

The lawsuit, obtained by Rolling Stone, read: “Any fan of Bruno Mars’ ‘When I Was Your Man’ knows that Miley Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’ did not achieve all of that success on its own.

“‘Flowers’ duplicates numerous melodic, harmonic, and lyrical elements of ‘When I Was Your Man,’ including the melodic pitch design and sequence of the verse, the connecting bass-line, certain bars of the chorus, certain theatrical music elements, lyric elements, and specific chord progressions.

“It is undeniable based on the combination and number of similarities between the two recordings that ‘Flowers’ would not exist without ‘When I Was Your Man’.”

With Cyrus’ fellow songwriters Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack being named as co-defendants, it continued: “With ‘Flowers,’ Cyrus, Hein, and Pollack have created a derivative work of ‘When I Was Your Man’ without authorisation.”

LADbible Group has contacted a representative of Miley Cyrus for comment.

Cyrus’ ‘Flowers’ picked up the coveted Record Of The Year award at the Grammys this year, and the singer was more than made up.

In her acceptance speech, she said: “This award is amazing. But I really hope that it doesn’t change anything because my life was beautiful yesterday. Not everyone in the world will get a Grammy, but everyone in this world is spectacular.

“So please don’t think that this is important, even though it’s very important, right guys?”

Cyrus also took to the stage to perform ‘Flowers’ on the night, and her fans were delighted.

“Her confidence is unmatched, she walked out there and showed the world what a live performance SHOULD BE,” one commented.

“No one is ever to going to need to refer to her as someone’s daughter or some previous TV persona. Her artistry is absolutely center stage,” a second penned.

“I can’t believe she wrote this. What a beautiful song and she deserves it,” a third added.
