90s movie with ‘best cast ever’ left viewers traumatised despite it being a comedy

People can’t believe they were allowed to see it as a kid

Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, all legendary films in their own right. And all of them have the same legendary guy behind them.

Tim Burton, obviously. With his latest film due to come out this week, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, you might be having a bit of a binge of his creations.

But despite one of them described as having the ‘best cast ever’ and being a comedy, it often leaves viewers traumatised.

I mean, with the likes of Jack Nicholson, Pierce Brosnan, Glenn Close and Christina Applegate involved, it’s not hard to understand why this 90s classic has earned that compliment.

In case you hadn’t guessed yet (or are about to have your eyes opened to an absolute classic), I’m chatting about Mars Attacks!.

Released in 1997, the Burton banger also features Sarah Jessica Parker, Danny DeVito, Michael J. FoxJack Black, Natalie Portman and Martin Short.

Oh, and then there’s also the likes of Lisa Marie, Annette Bening, Tom Jones and even Ray J.

The black comedy sci-fi flick is a bit of a spoof that sees a group of Martians invade Earth. These aliens are pretty much unbeatable and have a rather cruel sense of humour of their own.

But with many people looking back at growing up in the 90s, they’re not so sure they were exactly old enough to watch it.

Racking up over 1,000 likes on letterbox, a user wrote: “It is insane that I was allowed to see this in a theatre at the age of 10.”

And another wrote on X: “I know it’s supposed to be funny, but Mars Attacks! scares the hell out of me,” as they said it’s got ‘some of the most evil creatures ever put to film’.

One also took top Reddit where they classed one scene as a moment in ‘films more disturbing than the creators likely intended’. Although, let’s be honest, it is Burton of all people.

They reflected on watching it as a kid as they wrote: “One moment in particular really got to me, and, seeing the film for the first time in about 25 years recently, it unsettled me just as much.”

Slight spoiler here, but it involved the moment Jack Black’s ‘dumb soldier character’ is vaporised while his parents watch on TV.

The viewer described it as ‘startingly dark and horrific’.

But still, people class the flick as one of their favourites as one wrote: “I’ve never seen Mars Attacks before. This cast is absolutely loaded!”

Mars Attacks! Has probably got the best cast for one film ever,” others agreed.

You can rent the 90s movie on the likes of Amazon Prime and Apple TV.
