Hundreds have been banned
Autumn means one thing for in the motoring industry: freshly made new cars on our roads with sparkly new number plates.
But hundreds of registrations have been banned by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) for new motors that have been hitting the streets of the United Kingdom since the start of September.
As well as issuing fines of up to £1,000 to problem motorists, the DVLA produces a banned plate list twice a year that includes letter and number combinations containing references to crime, racism, politics, and some aspects of religion.
On top of this, the DVLA says that any term deemed as too rude for the road, insulting, inappropriate, or that could cause offence or embarrassment, is also expected to be banned.
For cars made put on the roads since September, the reg will end in ’74’ on the first half of the plate.
And given that ‘4’ is used by many to replace the letter ‘A’, there has been a few issues. It’s why ‘FA74 NNY’, ‘SH74 TDD’ and ‘BL74 WJB’ won’t ever see the light of day. And no, we’re not explaining them.
Experts at Carwow explain that plates relating to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine have also been banned, which includes ‘FK74 RUS’. Again, self-explanatory.

Toilet humour is also banned, with ‘74 RTS’ and ‘AB74 STD’ not allowed. Party poopers, some might say.
The DVLA does allow some unique plates, with them auctioned off by the DVLA itself. The likes of ‘EL74 LEN’, ‘BA74 LDY’, and ‘DA74 DDY’ have all gone up for auction ahead of the September plate release.

In the registrations, the asterisk (*) is a wildcard character that stands for any character that may appear in that position, with the other characters in the potential reg being the offensive part:
